Disinfect Entire Rooms With Light

The Apollo, UV Germicidal Lamp For Entire Room Disinfection

What is Germicidal UV?

UV light is easy to understand. Germicidal UV light is actually just UV-C light. UV-C light is a specific type of wavelength of UV light that emits at 253.7nm.

It's too short to get past the ozone layer in the atmosphere, so you typically only see it in man-made inventions.

It was dubbed germicidal UV-C light because UV-C light is

  • Very effective at killing germs.
  • Doesn't allow germ immunity buildup
  • Is used in the medical industry to disinfect
  • Is used in the HVAC industry to disinfect
  • Has been shown time and time again to be a powerful disinfection method

The list goes on. Germicidal UV light or UV-C light is typically found in devices made to disinfect and clean large areas at once.

This is because the light is powerful enough to help disinfect whole rooms and large areas by simply shinning on them.

Germicidal UV-C light is more effective with more power - power in terms of wattage. The only other constraints are time and distance.

So how do you harness the power of germicidal UV light? How can you use this to disinfect in your home or business?

A germicidal UV lamp.

What Does A Germicidal UV Lamp Do?

Germicidal UV lamps are able to harness the power of this specific UV-C light, at 253.7nm, through their bulbs. Made from clear fused quartz, the light runs through these bulbs and shines bright electric blue. See below.

With a carefully designed structure that can push enough wattage for an effective germicidal effect, these lamps can be incredibly powerful and can cover large areas - entire rooms, if enough wattage is used.

The Apollo UV Germicidal Lamp, ours (we're Smart UV), runs at 60 Watts and can cover up to 1071 square feet.

When a germicidal lamp runs and is disinfecting rooms, it's range is increased with time. We created The Apollo to be able to cover up to 1071 square feet in an hour.

There are four settings on The Apollo as well - 15, 30, 45, and 60 minutes. This allows for customizable germicidal power for bathrooms, bedrooms, living rooms, offices, businesses, yoga studios, - they even work together.

Germicidal UV lamps can work together to disinfect larger areas as well. Many customers have been using multiple Apollo's to help disinfect

  • Dentist offices
  • Gyms
  • Studio's
  • Jewelry stores
  • Restaurants
  • Retail Stores
  • Appliance stores
  • Clothing Stores
  • Hotels
  • AirBnB's
  • Chiropractic Offices
  • Recording Studio's
  • Tattoo Parlors

That's just a shortlist of the types of places Apollo Germicidal UV Lamps can work together to clean.

To note: UV-C light isn't safe for humans or plants. You must leave the room after turning on The Apollo - it has a built-in delay start too.

The Apollo also creates ozone, please wait 45 minutes before re-entering, as ozone is not safe for humans.

There are many types of UV-C lamps out there. What we do at Smart UV is work to create effective, reliable, easy to use, and safely operated Germicidal UV Lamps.

These features are essential in making a good UV Lamp.

What Makes A Good Germicidal UV Lamp?

The features that make up a good UV Lamp come first in the effectiveness, and next in safety. The germicidal UV lamp should be easy to use and warn those who are unaware of how powerful these devices can be.

These warning labels are very important because when using a Germicidal UV lamp you must leave the room, and since The Apollo creates ozone, you must wait 45 minutes before re-entering the room.

The Apollo runs at 60 Watts and has an output of 168µW/cm2 of power, measured from one meter out. This power does decrease as the range extends, thus the hour-long setting for an effective range of 1071 square feet.

The Apollo has a cage encasing the dual Germicidal UV bulbs, to protect anyone from direct contact or shattering.

The Apollo has four cycles designed to accommodate any room size.

The Apollo has built-in safety features. The first safety feature is a 5-meter motion shut off sensor to protect against any unexpected visitors or pets. The next safety feature is the delayed start button. The third safety feature is the automatic shut off after the timer ends.

The Apollo stands at 2 feet tall and weighs only a few pounds - extremely light and portable, yet still bright enough to cover the area of whole rooms for natural ease of use.

The Apollo mitigates the risk of germs, bacteria, and viruses.

The Apollo can disinfect entire rooms and surfaces and uses ozone as well.

The ozone created by The Apollo creates a Two-In-One Cleaning Effect.

What's The Two-In-One Cleaning Effect?

The Two-In-One Cleaning Effect comes from the power of ozone and germicidal UV light.

The Apollo emits at 180nm, as well as 253.7nm. The 180nm frequency reacts with the oxygen in the air to create ozone.

Ozone isn't safe for humans to breathe in, and the ozone created by The Apollo will break down (ozone is unstable) in about 45 minutes. We also recommend airing out the room after a disinfection cycle.

Ozone has many sanitation benefits.

The ozone created by The Apollo deodorizes and purifies the air.

This combination of purging the air by breaking down the unwanted particles in the air, and the germicidal UV light disinfecting surfaces allow for the Two-In-One Cleaning Effect.

This combination is powerful and leaves every room cleaner than before after a disinfection cycle from The Apollo.

The disinfection abilities from The Apollo are great, and because of this we have safety procedures we recommend, so these lamps can be used in best practice.

What Are The Best Practices?

  • Never look directly at UV-C light

As stated above, UV-C is very dangerous to observe directly. It can cause serious damage to your eyes. It can and will damage your corneas.

  • Don’t be near any UV-C products while they are active.

Prolonged UV-C exposure can cause serious burns to your skin. It destroys cells from within by attacking their DNA.

  • Read warning labels before using any UV-C product

Be sure to always read the label of a UV-C product to get all of the warnings associated with it. Some you may not be familiar with so it's always best to double-check.

  • Read instruction manuals before use of any UV-C product

Each UV-C product has its own design and features. To get a better idea of how to best interact with these features and keep yourself safe it is important to thoroughly read the user manual.

  • Let others know that a UV-C device is in use

While it’s important to keep yourself safe it’s also just as important to keep others safe. This can be done by informing everyone that a UV-C product is in use. This should be done as clearly and effectively as possible. Don’t be afraid to throw a sign up if need be.

More About UV-C and Safety

What Safety Features Should A Germicidal UV Lamp Have?

Safety features that are essential to any Germicidal UV Lamp are first, an excellent manual explaining how the germicidal lamp works, how to keep yourself and others safe, and what to do in an emergency.

This is all in the manual of The Apollo.

Next, safety features that help protect unexpected visitors, pets, or accidental entrances - such as The Apollo's automatic shut off feature.

Protective casing for the glass UV-C bulbs.

Automatic shut-offs after the time have ended, as it wouldn't be safe to head back into the room while The Apollo is on.

If ozone is released, this should be noted and warning should be around it. Some UV-C lamp sellers don't always disclose information about ozone, some don't even know their lamps emit it.

To stop the creation of ozone, it's quite simple. We can use a doped fused quartz bulb, to block the 180nm range. This will prevent the creation of ozone.

We hope to offer this variation down the road.

What is Ozone?

Ozone is O3. Or 3 Oxygen molecules bonded together. It's unstable and breaks down back into O2 over time.

It's not safe for humans. It can cause lung and breathing issues - especially to those who are more sensitive (elderly, children, or those with pre-existing lung issues).

Please allow 45 minutes for the ozone to dissipate.

Smart UV products abide by OSHA's standards of ozone. The Ozone released by The Apollo is less than 0.1PPM.

OSHA standards say that it is safe for people to do light work in conditions of 0.1ppm ozone for up to eight hours.

What are the benefits of ozone?

Ozone is a great secondary sanitation method. With ozone, we are able to offer the Two-In-One Cleaning Effect that The Apollo has.

It is one of the most effective forms of sanitation. It is up to 50 times more effective than some standard disinfectants.

The deodorization and purification for the air is a great benefit of ozone. This naturally breaks down as well.

We recommend opening windows and ventilating the room after running an Apollo disinfection cycle.

If you don't have the capabilities to open a window, the ozone will break down naturally as it is an unstable molecule.
